Here is another thing: there are gaming spaces where safety tools really would destroy the dynamic that has been built up in that space by the people who enjoy it. The organizers know quite well that many of the participants in that space have reactionary politics and a lack of empathy. Those spaces are still majority white men, although age might be all over the map. They are pretty much exactly the guy described in the original blog post that started the cycle recently here in Southern Ontario, guys who really would tell a young woman “honey, let the real gamers play here, ok?” The organizers, if you ask them at the right moment and in the right candid mood, will tell you that introducing safety tools into the space would literally drive their “customers” away.
