I think what’s most important is players maintain agency unless the point of the game’s experience is that they are losing agency. Burning Wheel handles this by negotiating stakes before engaging the mechanics. Win or lose, you know what you are getting into and agreed to it. Powered By The Apocalypse games don’t have negotiation and minimal talk before engaging mechanics. Instead, the person affected is given choices. Often back out if they lost (possibly paying a penalty or not) or accept the results and get rewarded for it. Either way it feels like a choice vs. mind control.
