Forbidden Lands
Of course I’m in. I’m a little skeptical of the “retro” they jammed in — I assume that’s marketing language. Because other than the setting, this looks as modern as anything in the Mutant family.

From what I read the main artist will give a nostalgic feel to the game for swedes. Which might be enough to call it retro.
I’ve described it to others as a mixture of MY:Z, Torchbearer, and Wilderlands of High Fantasy. That’s a pretty potent mixture, especially if it’s leaning heavily on the MY:Z system for characters, exploration, and strongholds.
I’ve probably got one good fantasy campaign in me every other year. It’s not my favorite genre.
It’s great and frustrating that Fria Ligan games are starting to crowd out PbtA on my shelf and mind share.
If this game really follows through on its MY:Z heritage, it’ll probably be a campaign-length one-shot. Hell, they’re leaning into that idea with the idea of legacy-game-style stickers for the map. From what I gather, your group prefers fantasy games the most, so this might be a real chance at a long-term game for your group.
So many hyphens in this post…
Nah, we’re not especially fantasy oriented. That’s interesting, though! What gave you that idea?
I’m not too fond of the MYZ system but will probably back it anyway.
Also: campaign length one shot is our jam if we’re doing fantasy. (Darkening of Mirkwood, Great Pendragon Campaign).
Krister Persson I’ve seen you mention that a few times lately, maybe in reaction to this Kickstarter. You should write more about that sometime.
I think the retro comes from it being billed as a sandbox hex crawl.
Yeah, it’s the mode of play, not the techniques.
I backed for all the printed goodies.
Aside: I wish Stalhag was doing all the art.
If this game is like MYZ it’ll be rad. If it’s like Coriolis, pass
Oh, I thought you’d made a reference to your group being inclined towards fantasy games. My foggy memory tells me it was a stray comment during one of your actual play posts, so I’m probably just making shit up.
Definitely going to back it myself. Fantasy IS my preferred genre, and I’m hesitantly hopeful that this will solve the little problems some of my players have with Torchbearer.
Paul Beakley I have written a longer post about it now and placed it in my RPG collection 😊
