Hey, I recently purchased BoB and am currently preparing to run it. The decision came about because some of my players were bugging me to try a FitD and I saw the Black Company influence from a mile away and just had to try this game. Your article did a good job of describing the problems in your campaign and how they came up, and I hope I’ll be able to nip some of those issues in the bud. Friends of mine who have played BitD have said many of the same things about the rigid structure and preset actions killing opportunities for roleplay, but I’ve seen livestreamed campaigns where roleplay flourished, so I know it can be done. I’ll definitely make my characters provide a name and a portrait for the campaign roles, and maybe have them roll up and describe a few rookies in advance between sessions, maybe tease them in the camp scenes so they are established characters before they even go on mission.
